Eating all your favorite foods and never having to worry about putting on extra pounds. This might sound like a dream, but scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder are exploring a fascinating idea that could make this a reality. They've found a unique micro-organism that could help keep our weight in check.
This micro-organism, called Mycobacterium vaccae, is found in cow's milk and soil. When mice were injected with it, they seemed immune to the weight gain that typically comes from a diet high in fat and sugar. The researchers were amazed to see that these mice didn't gain any extra weight, even when they were eating an unhealthy diet.
Professor Christopher Lowry, who led the study, wasn't originally looking for a weight loss solution. He was studying the effects of this micro-organism on stress and inflammation. In earlier research, he found that Mycobacterium vaccae could reduce stress-induced inflammation in mice. This led him to think about how it might help with the brain inflammation and anxiety that often come with a poor diet.
In the experiment, some mice were fed a healthy diet, while others ate a diet similar to what many humans enjoy—lots of fatty and sugary foods. Half of each group also received weekly injections of Mycobacterium vaccae. By the end of the study, the mice that didn't get the injections and ate only junk food gained a lot of weight and had more harmful fat around their organs. But the mice that got the injections while eating the unhealthy diet didn't gain any extra weight and even had less of the bad fat.
This study is part of a larger body of research showing the benefits of healthy bacteria, often called "old friends, " that have been around since ancient times. As our modern world has become cleaner and more sanitized, we've lost contact with many of these helpful bacteria. This loss might be one reason why we're seeing more inflammatory diseases like Type 2 diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.
Chronic inflammation is a big problem because it can damage healthy cells, tissues, and organs. It's often linked to an imbalance in the gut microbiome, which helps with digestion and controls the immune system.
So, what's next? The idea of a vaccine to help control weight might sound like something from a sci-fi movie, but if it works, it could be a game-changer in medicine. More research is needed to understand how Mycobacterium vaccae prevents weight gain and whether the same effects can be seen in humans.
For now, the best way to get more of these "good" bacteria is to spend time in nature, like gardening, walking, or relaxing outdoors. Eating lots of fresh vegetables is also a good idea because they pick up healthy microbes from the soil.
