Ever wondered why some people can’t put their smartphones down? A study from Turkey has some answers. It looked at university students to see how smartphone addiction might be linked to our feelings of happiness and whether the fear of missing out (FoMO) plays a role. The study was done with 656 students, mostly females between 17 and 34 years old. They checked how belongingness, exclusion, happiness, and FoMO affect smartphone addiction. Belongingness means feeling accepted, while exclusion is the opposite.
The results showed that FoMO actually acts as a middleman—it affects how acceptance, exclusion, and happiness lead to smartphone addiction. This means that feeling like you're missing out on things can make people more likely to get addicted to their phones. So, what does this tell us? It highlights that smartphone addiction isn’t just about tech—it’s also about our social needs. If we feel accepted and happy, we’re less likely to get obsessed with our phones. Maybe it's time we focus more on real social connections instead of virtual ones.
