Drug Overdose Numbers Drop Again in 2025

United StatesThu May 14 2026
In the United States, the number of people who died from drug overdoses fell about 14 percent in 2025, according to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The total deaths were 69 973, down from roughly 81 300 the previous year. The decline is tied in large part to the easier access of naloxone, a powerful antidote that can reverse an overdose if given quickly. Experts say that wider availability of this drug has saved many lives.
Opioid‑related deaths also fell sharply, with an estimated 44 564 cases in 2025 compared to 55 296 the year before. Synthetic opioids, especially fentanyl, remain the biggest cause of overdose fatalities in the country. Most states saw fewer deaths overall, but a few—New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado—experienced increases of ten percent or more when compared with 2024.
