Get ready for a holiday adventure! Warner Bros is kickstarting the festive season with the international release of Amazon MGM Studios’ 'Red One'. Starting today, the action-packed Santa Claus caper movie hits screens in major markets like the UK, Korea, and Spain. By Friday, a total of 75 international markets will be eagerly awaiting this $200 million production starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans.
The global box office is buzzing with excitement. The movie is expected to rake in between $25 million and $30 million during its opening weekend. Comparing it with Johnson’s previous family film hit, 'Jungle Cruise' (2021), which opened with $26 million in similar markets, 'Red One' is anticipated to be a smash.
English-speaking regions, Latin America, and Western Europe are likely to be the biggest ticket sellers. While China is also on the opening day roster, expectations are low despite strong presales. The Christmas movie might face challenges in Asia, with Korea’s opening day results sitting at a modest $63K including previews.
Initially greenlit for streaming, 'Red One' got a theatrical go-ahead after impressing in test screenings. Warner Bros handles the international distribution, but Amazon MGM avoided a theatrical release in France due to complex window systems that would delay streaming by 17 months. Similarly, Turkey with its five-month window also got a pass.
The movie has been gaining traction in early tracking, aiming for a $36 million opening in the U. S. and Canada in mid-November. It’s promising a fun time for teen boys, with potential to attract older females and males too. International young males are also expected to flock to the theaters. If positive word-of-mouth spreads (despite Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 40% rating), 'Red One' could outshine upcoming female-focused titles like 'Moana 2' and 'Wicked'.
Catch 'Red One' in IMAX and premium large formats (PLF) during this weekend’s overseas opening, before they switch to 'Gladiator' next week. Despite this, 'Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance' is likely to keep the top spot internationally in its third weekend.
To celebrate the global launch, Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, JK Simmons, Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, and director Jake Kasdan attended the world premiere in Berlin on Sunday. They’re now heading to the UK for a photocall and a chat with Graham Norton.
