Earbuds might soon track your running style better than watches

Most runners use earbuds to listen to music or podcasts, not to study their movement. But what if those tiny devices could also measure how you run? Researchers tested this idea by equipping earbuds with motion sensors. They asked 30 runners—men and women—to jog on treadmills and solid platforms while the earbuds recorded their steps. The goal? To see if the earbuds could predict forces under their feet as accurately as lab machines do.
The earbuds worked surprisingly well. They detected when each foot hit the ground nearly as precisely as special insoles or hip-mounted trackers. More impressive, they estimated the push-up force from the ground with less than 10% error in most tests. They even recreated the full force curve your feet feel with each step, not just the peak numbers. For runners who hate wearing extra gadgets, earbuds could be a game-changer. Still, the technology isn’t perfect. It struggled slightly with very fast changes in force, showing about 11% average error when guessing unseen runners. That means it won’t replace force plates in sports labs anytime soon. But for everyday athletes, it’s close enough to spot differences between good and bad running styles without a gym visit.
