In East Chicago, a street now carries the names of Jesse and Rosemarie Gomez, two influential figures in local politics. Jesse made history as the first Hispanic elected official in Indiana, while Rosemarie became the first Hispanic woman on the East Chicago City Council after her husband's passing.
The city honored them by renaming the 3800 block of Grand Boulevard as Jesse & Rosemarie Gomez Way. Councilman Robert Garcia, who represents their former district, emphasized the importance of their legacy. "We stand on the backs of those who came before us, " he said, acknowledging the impact of their leadership.
Their son, Jesse Gomez Jr. , shared his parents' inspiring stories. Jesse Sr. 's family moved from Mexico to East Chicago in 1916. He studied political science in Mexico but returned to the U. S. to work and eventually entered politics. He served multiple terms on the City Council and held various other roles, including coordinating the East Chicago Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Rosemarie, born in Mexico, moved frequently between the U. S. and Mexico as a child. She worked young to support her family but later graduated from high school. She was involved in community events, like the Mexican Independence Day Parade, and became a U. S. citizen to support her husband's political career.
The Gomez family's contributions to East Chicago are immense. Their son highlighted their kindness, talent, and dedication. "Together, my parents were trailblazers, " he said, comparing them to iconic figures like John and Jackie Kennedy.
