Ebola Outbreak Triggers Global Alert

Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of CongoSun May 17 2026
The World Health Organization has declared a worldwide health emergency after the Ebola virus spread in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The alert follows reports that a province in northeastern Congo has seen many suspected deaths linked to the virus. Health officials confirmed cases not only in that province but also in both countries’ capital cities, Kinshasa and Kampala. In the Ituri Province where the outbreak started, 246 people were suspected of infection and 80 died, yet only eight confirmed cases passed laboratory tests. The real number of infections may be much higher than the current figures suggest, according to the WHO.
From 13 samples taken across different areas, eight tested positive for Ebola. The organization emphasized uncertainty about how many people are actually infected and where the virus has spread. This situation does not yet qualify as a pandemic, but it is serious enough to require international action. The WHO’s emergency declaration calls on member states to prepare for potential spread and to share vaccines, treatments and other resources. In Kampala, two confirmed cases were identified within a day; both came from Congo but were unrelated to each other. One of those cases involved a 59‑year‑old man who died three days after admission. In Kinshasa, the confirmed case involved a person returning from Ituri Province.
