Ebola's Rare Strain Poses Challenges in Central Africa
DR CongoSun Jun 14 2026
A serious health crisis is unfolding in Central Africa, where a less common Ebola strain called Bundibugyo is spreading quickly. Health experts are worried because this version of the virus is harder to track and control. The outbreak has already affected over 900 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, with more than 220 suspected deaths. Neighbors like Uganda are also seeing cases, including five confirmed infections and one death.
This isn’t just about the numbers—violence, people being forced from their homes, and weak healthcare systems make it tougher to stop the virus. Doctors and nurses are working hard, but delays in spotting cases mean the outbreak keeps outpacing their efforts. One American missionary caught the virus while helping in Congo and is now recovering in Germany.
Even though international health groups say the risk outside Africa is still low, they’ve raised the alarm inside the region. Past outbreaks have shown how dangerous Ebola can be, especially in places where hospitals and supplies are scarce. Right now, stopping this outbreak seems nearly impossible, and experts warn that without better control, the situation could get worse before it gets better.
