Trying to start your school day without a clear plan. That's what the educators at Andrew, Sandburg, and Stagg high schools have been dealing with for over 50 days! The Dist. 230 Federation of Teachers and the CCSD 230 Board of Education have been busy trying to agree on a new multi-year contract. They've had the help of a federal mediator since April and met seven times, but still no contract! Over 300 members of the union showed up at a recent school board meeting to push for a settlement. Michelle Etchason, the union president, made it clear that they're not happy about working without a contract. She said, "We deserve better. It's time to settle this contract. " The board says they're trying to find a fair deal for staff while also being careful with taxpayer money.
They plan to meet again on Nov. 12 to keep talking. It's a tricky situation, especially with salary calculations based on a 23-step process. The average teacher's salary in CCSD 230 is around $96, 000, but this can go up to $128, 000 for those with the most experience. It's interesting to compare this with other districts. For example, in Bremen Township Dist. 228 with four high schools, the average is $95, 734. Evergreen Park has the lowest at $83, 809, while Oak Lawn and Reavis High School have higher averages. The big question is what's causing the delay. It's not just about the money; it's about finding a fair balance for everyone involved.
