On Monday, a trial began in Paris involving eight individuals accused of various roles in the 2020 beheading of French teacher Samuel Paty. The teacher was targeted after showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in a class on free speech. The attacker, Abdoullakh Anzorov, was killed by police, but eight others face charges ranging from terrorism conspiracy to aiding and abetting murder. One defendant is the father of a student who falsely claimed Paty discriminated against Muslims. This father and others are accused of spreading false information and helping Anzorov. Paty had actually advised Muslim students to turn away during the lesson to avoid offense.
Another defendant, Abdelhakim Sefrioui, helped create a video about Paty. He denies pushing false information, claiming they only wanted disciplinary action against the teacher. Last year, six students from Paty's school were sentenced for their roles in the murder. Five received suspended sentences, and one was ordered to house arrest. The trial, expected to last until December 20, will be decided by a panel of judges, as France does not use juries.
