Over 250 Venezuelans, sent to El Salvador from the US, faced terrible treatment. They were beaten, starved, and even sexually assaulted. This happened in a big detention center called Cecot. The conditions there were very bad. The prisoners were kept in secret, given little food, and treated badly.
The US government under Trump knew about these problems. They sent these people to El Salvador anyway. The US even paid El Salvador's government $4. 7 million to keep these people locked up. This money was used to cover the costs of their detention.
The report about this situation was made by Human Rights Watch and Cristosal. They talked to over 200 people who were in the detention center. The prisoners said they were beaten for small things. Things like talking too loudly or asking for medical help. Some were even beaten after visits from important people.
The report also said that some prisoners were sexually abused. But many did not report it because they were ashamed. The prisoners were finally released in July. This happened as part of a deal with Venezuela's government.
The treatment of these Venezuelans is part of a bigger problem. In the last three years, 90, 000 people in El Salvador have been detained and tortured. At least 420 people have died because of this. The report says that the El Salvador government might be committing crimes against humanity. The US government is involved in this because they sent people to these prisons.
