Elderly Health Tracking Across China: A 12‑Year Study
ChinaFri May 29 2026
The Multi‑City Elderly Health Examination Cohort Study, or MEHECS, has been following more than three‑million older adults across China since 2012. Each year participants receive a free check‑up that blends a personal interview, a full medical exam, and a summary of their health status. The survey gathers details about lifestyle choices, current ailments, medication use, and even past vaccinations that weren’t part of official programs. Meanwhile, doctors measure body metrics, conduct physical exams, test functional abilities, and run extra scans if needed.
Researchers link this rich health data to the national death registry. By mid‑2023, they had recorded 412, 869 deaths during a median follow‑up of just over four years. The average age at baseline was 70. 9, with one in ten participants above eighty and nearly half of the cohort male. These numbers give a realistic snapshot of aging in China’s diverse regions.
Because MEHECS is still collecting information, new findings keep emerging. Policymakers can use these insights to design better programs that support healthy aging and reduce mortality among the country’s growing senior population.
