Trying to cut waste in a system that sends money to the deceased, funds questionable research, and maintains useless buildings. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have taken on a mammoth task: reducing government spending by $6. 75 trillion. Their Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) aims to eliminate bureaucratic bloat and unnecessary expenses.
Last year, the government paid out $1. 3 billion to deceased individuals. A simple cross-check with the Treasury Department could prevent this. Prisoners behind bars received $171 million in unemployment benefits, and Medicare and Medicaid handed out $101 billion in improper payments due to fraud.
In 2021, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) gave $549, 000 to a Russian lab for experiments on cats. That same year, taxpayers funded a $4 million trip for Joe and Hunter Biden to Ireland. The list goes on with monkeys, drag shows, and empty federal buildings.
Government spending has surpassed reason, with $70 billion still earmarked for COVID-19, and Dr. Anthony Fauci receiving $15 million in security despite retirement. The State Department even funded drag shows in Ecuador. Meanwhile, IRS employees owe $50 million in unpaid taxes, and the EPA spent $620, 000 on guns and ammunition.
In total, these examples add up to a staggering $386 billion in wasteful spending. The DOGE has a steep hill to climb, but every dollar saved is a step in the right direction.
