Engineer's Bail Raises Questions Over Drone Attack Case
Boston, USAFri Jun 12 2026
A judge in Boston has decided to release an Iranian‑born engineer on bail just before his trial. The case connects him to a 2024 drone strike that hit a U. S. military post in Jordan, killing three soldiers and wounding many others.
The engineer, who holds both U. S. and Iranian passports, was first held in December after authorities said he might flee. He faces charges for helping to acquire technology used in Iranian military drones.
The judge cited changes in the political situation. Since U. S. and Israeli attacks on Iran began, returning to Tehran would be difficult for the engineer and his family. He lives with his wife in Natick, Massachusetts, and they want to stay in the U. S.
The judge set a $500, 000 bond with strict home detention and a GPS ankle monitor. The engineer’s lawyer did not comment.
He has denied the accusations of illegally obtaining export‑controlled technology for an Iranian company that supplies drones. The trial is scheduled for June 22, after the U. S. extradited a related Iranian businessman.
The case highlights how international conflicts can affect legal proceedings in the United States. It also shows the careful balance courts try to maintain between protecting society and respecting individual rights.
