Estonia Says Child Social‑Media Bans Won’t Fix Things
EstoniaSat Apr 11 2026
Estonia stands alone in the EU, refusing to ban kids from social media.
The country’s education minister argued that blocking platforms won’t solve the real issues, and warned children will always find a way to access them.
Research shows that too much time online can lead to depression, anxiety, lack of sleep and weight gain from targeted junk‑food ads. Yet teens also use social media for support and community.
Because of the negative data, many nations have moved to ban or restrict minors’ access. Countries like Australia, Greece, France, Austria, Spain, Indonesia, Malaysia, the UK and Denmark have passed laws or proposed limits.
Estonia’s minister believes those bans are misdirected. She says it is unfair to blame kids for the harm and expects them to self‑regulate, a task they can easily sidestep.
Instead she points the finger at governments and tech giants. “Europe pretends to be weak against big American and international corporations, ” she said, urging the EU to enforce stronger regulation on these companies.
While the EU already has robust tech rules, Estonia insists that banning children from social media is not the answer. The real solution lies in holding platforms accountable and educating users, not shutting them out.
