EU Leader Urges US and Israel to End Iran Conflict

Brussels, BelgiumTue Mar 17 2026
The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, told reporters in Brussels that the war involving Iran must stop. She said the EU is talking with Middle‑East governments to find a diplomatic way out of the fighting. Kallas added that Europe would not block naval traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil and gas. However, she warned that any European intervention would likely come through diplomacy rather than military action. European officials have declined President Trump’s request to help keep the Strait open, arguing they do not want to put their troops in a war that began elsewhere. Trump has cautioned that this reluctance could hurt NATO, but EU leaders remain firm on their stance. The former Estonian prime minister explained that the EU has been consulting with Gulf states, Jordan and Egypt. The goal is to propose a solution that allows Iran, Israel and the United States to disengage without losing face.
She emphasized that wars are easier to start than to end, and that the current conflict threatens Europe’s energy security. Higher fuel costs are already felt across the continent because Iran controls a key maritime chokepoint. Kallas also suggested using a UN‑brokered model from the Black Sea to keep grain, food and fertilizer shipments safe during war. She has spoken with UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres about applying a similar arrangement to the Strait of Hormuz, hoping neighboring countries can agree on the plan. The EU’s approach reflects a broader frustration with being left out of U. S. decisions that affect global stability. Kallas called for a united diplomatic front to prevent the conflict from spiraling further and causing widespread crises.
