Pope Leo XIV recently emphasized the importance of Europe's involvement in any future peace agreement for Ukraine. He made these remarks after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The pope argued that excluding Europe from peace talks would be unrealistic, as the war is happening on European soil. He also criticized the Trump administration's approach to the US-European alliance, suggesting it could weaken long-standing partnerships.
The pope's comments came after the Trump administration released a national security strategy that downplayed the importance of the US-European alliance. Leo XIV expressed concern that this strategy could significantly alter the relationship between the two regions. He also noted that while some people in the US might support this approach, many others would disagree.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy addressed accusations from Donald Trump that he was clinging to power and ignoring democratic principles. Zelenskyy responded by saying that the decision to hold elections during wartime should be left to the Ukrainian people, not foreign leaders. He also expressed his willingness to hold elections within the next three months, provided that foreign allies help ensure security.
However, not everyone in Ukraine supports the idea of holding elections during wartime. Serhiy Rakhmanin, an MP from the opposition Holos party, argued that elections would only cause harm and help the enemy. Despite this, Zelenskyy remains determined to send an updated plan to end the war to Washington.
