Faith, Happiness and Aging: How Belief Helps Seniors Thrive
BrazilFri Mar 06 2026
Older people in Brazil are showing that a strong personal faith can help them feel happier and less sad, which in turn lets them live better lives as they age. A study of 538 seniors aged 60 to 101 measured how satisfied they were with life, how much depression they felt, and how well they aged. Participants also answered questions about their personal religious devotion.
The researchers looked at whether feeling good about life and having fewer depressive thoughts acted as bridges between personal faith and successful aging. They found that faith did not directly boost aging success; instead, it worked through two steps: first by making people happier with their lives, and second by lowering feelings of depression. When these two factors were in place, faith was linked to a higher quality of aging.
This pattern suggests that encouraging seniors to nurture their personal religious beliefs could be a useful strategy for communities and governments. By helping older adults feel more content and less depressed, faith‑based programs might support healthier, more satisfying aging experiences.
