As the fall season approaches, Kingston residents are getting ready to tidy up their yards and get rid of the summer's leafy mess. The City of Kingston has announced its 2024 brush and leaf collection schedule, and it's essential to know the ins and outs of this process to avoid any confusion.
The brush collection will kick off on October 1, and residents are asked to pile their brush loosely at the curbside by 8 a. m. on the Monday of their collection week. The City asks residents to stack brush, including pruned bits of bushes and trees, with the butt ends facing the street, and to skip root balls. It's crucial to note that not all yard waste is created equal, and residents should separate their brush from other yard waste like tomato plants and vegetable garden waste.
Leaf collection, on the other hand, will begin on November 4. Residents are advised to have leaves ready for collection at curbside by 8 a. m. on the Monday of their collection week. The City only accepts leaves in paper leaf bags or placed loosely in bushel baskets, garbage cans, or other rigid-sided receptacles. It's essential to remember that leaves in plastic bags or bags that resemble plastic will not be collected.
Instead of leaving yard waste to clutter up your home, consider composting it. Leaves can make great mulch, and grass clippings can be left on the lawn to feed it over the coming months. The City also encourages residents to drop off their yard waste at the Kingston Area Recycling Centre or Tomlinson Organics, which is open year-round.
