Festival Owner Stands Firm Over Controversial Headliner
London, UKTue Apr 07 2026
Melvin Benn, the chief manager of Festival Republic, has publicly backed his choice to book Ye for London’s Wireless Festival after several sponsors decided to walk away. Benn explained that he believes in second chances and urged people to pause their immediate backlash. He said that in a world that is increasingly split, forgiving and giving people another shot are becoming rare values.
Ye will perform for a crowd of about 150, 000 over the three days from July 10 to 12. The artist has been in the news for hateful comments and praise of a notorious dictator. In 2023, he released a track titled “Heil Hitler” and sold T‑shirts bearing a swastika on his website. Earlier this year, Ye apologized in a letter that appeared full‑page in the Wall Street Journal, attributing his remarks to a severe mental episode linked to bipolar disorder.
The backlash has hit sponsors hard. Pepsi, Rockstar Energy and Diageo pulled out of the event after Ye’s name was announced as headliner, though Pepsi gave no explanation. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the booking “deeply concerning. ” Benn defended the decision by stressing that Ye’s music is already played on commercial radio, streamed online and legally available across the country. He added that the festival would only host performances of songs already in circulation and not provide a platform for controversial views.
Last month, Ye returned to the US stage with two shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles after a five‑year break. Fans there seemed to separate the artist’s personal statements from his music, welcoming him back after his apology. One attendee, Yovani Contreras, said he didn’t want to focus on politics or personal opinions but rather on the artistry. “To me, Ye is always going to be Ye, ” he remarked.
A spokesperson for Ye did not respond to a request for comment this week. The festival’s future now hangs in the balance as more sponsors consider whether to stay or leave, while fans debate what kind of performance is appropriate.
