Field Moves to Chiefs, Jets Look Ahead

New York City, USAMon Mar 16 2026
The New York Jets have decided to part ways with quarterback Justin Fields after just one season. A trade has been arranged, sending Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a sixth‑round draft pick slated for 2027. The deal lets the Jets keep a portion of Fields’ contract, but they will still owe him a sizeable payment next year. If the Jets had released him instead, their salary cap would have taken a hit of about $22 million. Fields will likely serve as a backup to Patrick Mahomes, who is recovering from an ACL tear. The Chiefs are also moving on from former starter Gardner Minshew, who joined the Arizona Cardinals. With Fields gone, New York will rely on Geno Smith, Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe for quarterback depth. Tyrod Taylor remains a free agent.
During his stint with the Jets, Fields’ playing time was erratic. He began the season but suffered a concussion in Week 2, which opened the door for Taylor to start. After a brief return, injuries forced Fields out again, and Taylor took over once more before the season ended. Cook stepped in as a starter due to injuries, highlighting the instability at the position. Last year’s numbers were modest. Fields completed 1, 259 passing yards and seven touchdowns across nine starts, while also rushing for 383 yards and four scores. The Jets’ offense finished near the bottom of league rankings in passing yardage, touchdowns, and overall yardage. This move makes the Chiefs Fields’ third team in three seasons. He previously split time with Russell Wilson on the Pittsburgh Steelers and then started for the Jets after a year with the Chicago Bears, where he was drafted 11th overall in 2021. His journey reflects the volatile nature of quarterback careers in the NFL.
