Fielder’s Frustration: A Fan, a Gesture and Mental‑Health Talk

Minneapolis, USAWed Apr 15 2026
Jarren Duran, an outfielder for the Red Sox, was on Target Field in Minneapolis when a fan made a cruel remark about his mental health. The comment came during the fifth inning of a 6‑0 loss to the Twins. Duran, who had just grounded out and was heading back from first base, flashed an obscene gesture at the fan near the field’s camera well. He later said the fan had told him to “kill himself. ” Duran admitted he has become accustomed to such insults, but that they still trigger him.
He explained that his mental‑health struggles were already public because of a Netflix documentary released earlier this year. In the film, he revealed that he had attempted suicide during the 2022 season. When asked about the incident, Duran said he feels partly responsible for attracting negative attention by speaking openly. He also noted that the incident was not the first time a fan has confronted him over this topic; last year he faced a similar situation in Cleveland, where the fan was ejected from Progressive Field. Team manager Alex Cora said he was unaware of the exchange until after the game, noting that Duran had not discussed it with anyone on the team. Duran agreed, saying he tried to keep his focus on winning rather than bringing up personal attacks. He added that while the confrontation was unsettling, it is not the priority during a game.
