The search is on for a new screenwriter for the upcoming Daisy Ridley movie, which will continue the story of Rey from the Star Wars series. The latest writer, Steven Knight, has left the project. Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, known for her work on Ms. Marvel, is still set to direct. Ridley, who played Rey, shared that she's awaiting a script and has some insights into the story, including Rey starting a Jedi Academy. Despite this change, the planned release dates for the movie remain unchanged, with two dates set for December 2026 and December 2027.
It's not unusual for Lucasfilm to switch writers to perfect their Star Wars scripts. Knight, who has worked on critically acclaimed films like Maria, is just the latest in a line of screenwriters, following Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Meanwhile, another Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is in the works. This film, written by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, features stars like Sigourney Weaver and Pedro Pascal. A sneak peek at D23 showed glimpses of familiar Star Wars elements, including Babu Frik, AT-ATs on a snowy planet, and a red alien.
