Finland Boosts Fighter Power with New Glide Bombs
Finland, HelsinkiThu Jun 18 2026
Finland is adding a fresh punch to its F‑35 jets by ordering the GBU‑53 SDB II glide bombs from the United States. The move gives the Nordic nation a stronger air‑to‑ground strike option and complements its recent $9. 4 billion purchase of 64 F‑35 fighters from Lockheed Martin. \n\nThe GBU‑53 SDB II is a precision‑guided missile that can hit moving targets over medium ranges, even when the weather isn’t ideal. Its compact design means a single F‑35 can carry several of these bombs at once, increasing the aircraft’s firepower. \n\nRaytheon, a U. S. defence contractor under RTX, will produce the munitions.
The deal includes not just the bombs but also spare parts, manuals, transport arrangements, training for crews, repair facilities and ongoing support services. \n\nDefence Minister Antti Hakkanen said the new capability will strengthen Finland’s deterrent in challenging conditions, helping the country keep pace with NATO allies. \n\nWith this addition, Finland’s air force gains a versatile weapon that can be deployed quickly and accurately against a range of ground targets, enhancing the overall effectiveness of its modern fighter fleet. \n\n
