Finland Opens Door to Nuclear Arms as Security Strategy Shifts

Finland, HelsinkiThu Mar 05 2026
Finland is set to remove a long‑standing prohibition that has kept nuclear weapons off its land. The move follows the country’s recent decision to join NATO, a step many see as a response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The 1987 law that banned the import, creation, and use of nuclear bombs on Finnish soil is now being revised. The change aims to let Finland participate fully in NATO’s collective defence plans, according to the Defence Minister. While Finland has historically stayed neutral during major conflicts, its new policy aligns it with neighboring Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Those countries also forbid nuclear weapons in peacetime but do not outlaw them during war.
France and Germany have announced plans to strengthen European nuclear deterrence, reflecting growing concerns over Russian aggression and instability linked to Iran. Sweden’s leader has stated that the country would not host foreign nuclear forces under normal conditions, but he acknowledged that a different security environment could alter that stance. Finland shares a long border with Russia and has recently signed a defence agreement with the United States, allowing U. S. forces to use certain Finnish military sites. This policy shift may enable Finland to host nuclear weapons during wartime, a significant change from its previous stance.
