Firefighters put their lives on the line to protect others, but their protective gear might be putting their health at risk. Recent research has uncovered that some firefighter turnout gear contains chemicals linked to cancer and hormone problems. The study focused on brominated flame retardants, which are used to slow down flames but have been connected to serious health issues. These chemicals are found in the layers of firefighter gear, which includes an outer shell, a middle moisture barrier, and an inner lining. The research team tested 12 sets of turnout gear, including some marketed as PFAS-free. PFAS, another group of chemicals, were found in older gear but were barely present in the newer sets. However, brominated flame retardants were found in all the gear tested, with higher levels in the non-PFAS gear, especially in the moisture barrier layer.
One chemical, decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), was particularly common. While it hasn't been extensively studied in the U. S. , a study in China linked it to thyroid problems in workers. The presence of these chemicals in firefighter gear raises concerns about the long-term health effects on firefighters. The study also highlights the need for more transparency in the manufacturing of firefighter gear. Fire departments must consider both the financial and personal safety costs of keeping or replacing gear. Some companies now offer gear made without these harmful chemicals, and firefighters should demand more information about the equipment they use.
