A severe tornado outbreak in Florida, linked to Hurricane Milton, has tragically claimed several lives. Authorities in St. Lucie County confirmed fatalities in their area, with the highest toll reported at the Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort Pierce. The exact number of victims remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, the town of Wellington faced significant damage, with around ten injuries but no reported fatalities. Large-scale property damage was prevalent, ranging from minor roof issues to completely destroyed buildings. Trees were uprooted, cars flipped, and some homes became uninhabitable.
The National Weather Service in Miami, Tampa, and Melbourne issued over 130 tornado warnings related to Milton by Wednesday evening. One tornado in the Everglades crossed Interstate 75 in Broward, and another in Fort Myers caused significant damage, with videos on social media capturing the intense funnel clouds over Palm Beach County and other areas.
Meteorologists noted that while the exact count of tornadoes was uncertain, Hurricane Ian in 2022 only spawned 64 tornado warnings. Tornado formation during hurricanes often occurs in the right-front quadrant due to atmospheric heat, humidity, and wind shear, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
