Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida is reportedly steering clear of calls from Kamala Harris, even as Hurricane Milton threatens to hit the state just two days after Hurricane Helene. An aide to DeSantis confirmed that the governor isn't picking up Harris's calls because they seem political. As of Monday, DeSantis hadn't spoken to President Biden either, according to the aide. However, a White House report revealed that Biden had separate calls with DeSantis and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor to discuss recovery from Helene and preparations for Milton. Biden offered his support and asked them to call if they needed anything. DeSantis has been coordinating with FEMA's director, Deanne Criswell. Last week, DeSantis mentioned that Biden called but he was unable to take it. The response to Helene has turned into a political hot potato, with the White House and Democrats asking for an end to misinformation. Both Trump and Harris have visited affected states, and Republicans have linked disaster relief to immigration, which the White House denies. The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, stressed the government's commitment to a strong response to Milton and addressed the broader issue of misinformation. After Helene struck, DeSantis assured that Florida was managing well and even sent resources to North Carolina.
