Dr. Phil McGraw, known for his talk show and psychology background, recently joined a ride-along with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Chicago. This wasn't your typical day out; it was part of a larger effort to showcase how ICE targets known criminals and terrorists. McGraw, along with former Trump administration official Thomas Homan, aimed to dispel the notion that immigration authorities are conducting random neighborhood sweeps. Instead, they wanted to highlight the targeted nature of their operations.
The ride-along came at a time when President Trump had pledged to initiate the largest mass deportation plan in U. S. history. Meanwhile, immigration advocates reminded people of their right to due process during encounters with authorities. A significant event occurred when a group of Quaker congregations sued the Department of Homeland Security over changes to policies that previously restricted ICE raids in sensitive locations like houses of worship and schools.
On Sunday, ICE agents arrested nearly 1, 200 people, the highest single-day total since Trump took office. Around half of those detained did not have criminal records, according to an administration official. McGraw's video, posted on his X profile, shows him questioning a man who seems to be handcuffed and standing on the street with Homan. The man asks for a lawyer, and when McGraw inquires about previous deportations, the man recognizes Dr. Phil from his show.
In the video, Homan identifies the man as undocumented and convicted of sex crimes involving children. When asked about the alleged crimes, the man responds, "not really. " This highlights the complexity of these situations and the importance of understanding both sides of the story.
Dr. Phil, who ended his long-running daytime show in 2023, has been involved in politics before, including speaking at one of Trump's rallies. However, he maintains that his appearances are not political endorsements.
