Former Hawks Finance Boss Gets 3‑Year Prison Term for $3. 7 Million Theft
Atlanta, USAThu Apr 30 2026
Lester T. Jones Jr. , once a senior finance officer for the Atlanta Hawks, was sentenced to three years and five months behind bars after stealing roughly $3. 7 million from the team.
The money was siphoned through false expense claims and personal use of corporate credit cards, according to federal prosecutors.
Jones had been with the Hawks from 2016 until mid‑2025, rising to senior vice president for finance in August 2021. In that role he managed the team’s American Express corporate card and the electronic reimbursement system.
In court filings, prosecutors described how Jones turned his high‑level position into a personal goldmine. He submitted dozens of fake business expense requests, leading the team to pay him for non‑existent trips and services. He also charged private costs to company cards, including $80, 000 for overseas travel to the Bahamas and Thailand; nearly $100, 000 spent on luxury apparel at Saks Fifth Avenue; a diamond ring worth more than $115, 000; Omega watches totaling almost $22, 000; and over $160, 000 on concert and event tickets.
Jones pleaded guilty to wire fraud in December after the Department of Justice’s indictment in November. The judge imposed a sentence that reflects the seriousness of his breach of trust, sending a clear warning to other insiders who might consider similar schemes.
The Hawks have not commented on the sentencing. An Atlanta special agent highlighted that insider threats can cause severe financial damage, but also noted that such fraud is not beyond detection. Federal authorities remain vigilant in pursuing financial crimes at all levels.
