Dr. Jerome Adams, former U. S. surgeon general, took to social media to alert the incoming administration about a rise in infectious diseases. Adams, who worked with President Trump, expressed concern over the increase in whooping cough, measles, and bird flu cases. He emphasized the need for a strong response plan and public trust in vaccines to avoid outbreaks.
Whooping cough cases have jumped to over 25, 000 this year, far exceeding the 5, 404 cases reported in all of 2023. Newborns and infants are at the highest risk, and vaccinations are highly recommended. Measles has also seen a significant rise, with over 280 cases in the U. S. this year, compared to just 4 in 2023. The CDC reports that 89% of these cases were in unvaccinated individuals.
Bird flu, while still low risk to humans, has affected over 100 million poultry and 600 dairy herds, driving up egg prices. Adams urged the new administration to be prepared.
Trump recently nominated Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, a Fox News contributor, as the new surgeon general. Nesheiwat was praised for her work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
