A group of former Trump aides, who have been Republicans all their lives, have joined the growing list of people criticizing Trump's character and suitability for the presidency. They've written a letter supporting John Kelly, a former military general who worked for Trump. Kelly recently called Trump a fascist.
"We weren't shocked by what Kelly said, " the letter reads. "We know Trump well, having worked with him. We've seen this behavior before. "
Among those who signed the letter are Kevin Carroll, a former senior counselor to Kelly, and Sarah Matthews, a former deputy press secretary. Others include Elizabeth Neumann, Anthony Scaramucci, and Miles Taylor, who wrote a book warning about Trump's behavior early in his presidency.
The letter comes after Kelly told the New York Times that Trump fits the description of a fascist. This was after The Atlantic published a story where Trump wished for generals like Hitler's. Kelly also talked about Trump's disrespect for the military. Trump's campaign denies these claims.
Many high-ranking officials, like former defense secretaries and national security advisers, have also warned about Trump's extremism and disregard for the constitution. The letter says, "We support Kelly's warning. We didn't sign lightly. We're lifelong Republicans. But there are moments when country comes before party. This is one of those moments. "
