Fort Pierce Flight School Closes, 50 Staff Lose Jobs
Fort Pierce, Florida, USAFri Apr 17 2026
The Aviator College of Aeronautical Science & Technology, a private flight training center in Fort Pierce, shut its doors on April 15, sending shock waves through the local aviation community. The campus had been housed at Treasure Coast International Airport and offered courses ranging from piloting basics to advanced aviation management.
Within a week, the college announced its permanent closure and began laying off about 50 employees, including administrators, mechanics, instructors, pilots, and support staff. The decision was prompted by a lawsuit filed by the family of a former student, which the school said prevented a sale and forced it into bankruptcy.
Employees received notice on April 9, and the layoffs started the next day, in accordance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The act requires companies to give advance warning before mass layoffs or shutdowns, giving workers time to seek new opportunities.
The closure not only affects the staff but also disrupts training for aspiring pilots in the region, who now must find alternative schools or programs. Local aviation enthusiasts and students are calling for support to preserve flight education in the area.
The incident highlights how legal challenges can derail educational institutions and emphasizes the importance of financial resilience in specialized training programs.
