France and Norway team up on nuclear defense
Norway, France, Paris, OsloThu May 28 2026
France and Norway just announced they’ll talk about France protecting Norway with its nuclear weapons if needed. This new idea shows how European countries are trying to depend less on the U. S. for their safety.
For years, Norway trusted NATO and America’s nuclear shield. Now, it’s looking closer at Europe’s options. France suggested a plan where its nuclear weapons could help defend European friends. Norway agreed, but said its main security still comes from NATO and the U. S. French leaders called this a big step for Europe to take more control of its own defense.
The plan means Norway will join France’s nuclear defense talks. It won’t store nuclear weapons in Norway unless there’s a war. This move follows similar deals France made with Poland and Lithuania, all countries near Russia.
Norway isn’t part of the European Union but shares a border with Russia in the Arctic. Its leaders say working with France makes Europe and NATO stronger. They also mention Europe needs to spend smarter on defense, not just rely on one country.
Big powers like Russia and the U. S. have thousands of nuclear weapons. France has fewer but still a strong arsenal. This new partnership might change how Europe protects itself without waiting for America’s help.
