From Sea Captain’s Son to Record Breaker: The Long Life of Geert Boomgaard
Groningen, NetherlandsMon Apr 20 2026
Geert Boomgaard’s life spanned more than a century, starting in 1788 when France was still a monarchy and ending in 1899 when the world was on the brink of the 20th century. He grew up in Groningen, a Dutch town where survival was tough, and his father worked as a struggling sea captain. Large families were common back then, but Geert’s early years didn’t hint at the extraordinary future ahead of him. He chose a life at sea like his father, but wars made that career unstable. When trade routes became risky, he switched to the military, joining Napoleon’s army during a time when Europe was constantly at war.
After years of service, he settled down, married twice, and had 12 children. His life followed a familiar pattern for the era—hard work, family, and little recognition. But his final years changed everything. In 1898, at age 109, he broke the record for the oldest person ever documented, becoming the first verified supercentenarian in history. Newspapers worldwide celebrated his milestone, making him a rare celebrity in an age when most people didn’t live past 50.
His fame was short-lived. He passed away just months after setting the record, outliving his wives, all his children, and even many of his grandchildren. His achievement stood for decades until others surpassed him, but his story remains a fascinating look at how one ordinary life intersected with some of history’s biggest changes.
