In a significant move, the U. S. Department of Justice is injecting much-needed funds into South Carolina non-profits that support individuals affected by sexual violence. This decision comes on the heels of a substantial decline in federal aid earlier this year. One such organization, Pathways to Healing, is breathing a sigh of relief as it prepares to continue offering essential services to survivors.
With a $925,000 grant from the State Department of Public Health, Pathways to Healing will be able to maintain its free services, including a 24/7 hotline, hospital accompaniments, clinical counseling, and education. The funding is a vital lifeline for the organization, which had to cut 10 positions from its team earlier this year due to financial constraints. The grant covers only about 5% of Pathways to Healing's budget, but every bit counts.
Rebecca Lorick, the executive director of Pathways to Healing, is well aware of the importance of these services. As a survivor of sexual assault and domestic violence herself, she knows firsthand the transformative power of support and guidance. "I wouldn't be where I am today without services like those we provide at Pathways," she said.
Pathways to Healing's services are not limited to direct support for survivors. The organization also reaches out to schools and communities to educate children about healthy boundaries and relationships. Lorick estimates that in 95% of these sessions, someone will come forward to disclose their own experiences with sexual abuse. This stark reality underscores the need for awareness and understanding.
The funding boost will enable Pathways to Healing to continue its vital work, helping survivors heal and rebuild their lives. As Lorick emphasized, "This funding will help us serve more people, and we're grateful for the support. "
