Future Leader of the World: Who Might Take Over at the UN

Geneva, SwitzerlandTue Apr 21 2026
The United Nations will pick its next chief in 2026, with the new secretary‑general starting a five‑year term on January 1, 2027. Several prominent figures have stepped forward to run for the role. One candidate is Rafael Grossi, an Argentine diplomat who has spent the last six years running the International Atomic Energy Agency. He is known for negotiating with Iran after the United States left a key nuclear agreement in 2018 and for placing inspectors at Russia‑occupied Ukrainian sites. Grossi says that even amid global divisions, cooperation through multilateral bodies can bring real change. Another contender is Rebecca Grynspan from Costa Rica. A former vice‑president of her country, she now leads the UN Conference on Trade and Development. Grynspan grew up in a family that fled Europe after World War II, which shaped her belief in the UN’s mission to prevent conflict. If elected, she would be the first woman to hold the top position and has spoken about balancing family life with public service.
Michelle Bachelet of Chile, who served twice as president and once as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, also has a bid. She was recently dropped by her own government but still receives support from Brazil and Mexico. Bachelet has faced criticism in the United States for her positions on abortion and human rights issues involving China. Senegal’s former president Macky Sall, a geologist by training, is another name in the running. He has built infrastructure and pushed for debt relief for developing nations while calling for a reformed Security Council that would give more voice to countries in the Global South. He has the backing of Burundi but not all African nations. Each of these leaders brings a different set of experiences and priorities to the table, from nuclear diplomacy to trade policy, human rights advocacy, and development leadership. The decision will shape how the UN tackles global challenges in the years ahead.
