You might have heard about people getting their genes tested to learn more about their health or ancestry. But what about folks in Brazil? A recent study took a closer look at why Brazilians are buying these tests and how it's affecting their lives. Researchers did an online survey with over 1, 500 people who had bought direct-to-consumer genetic tests (DTC-GT) in Brazil. Most of them were around 42 years old and more than half were women. So, why were they so interested in these tests? Well, over 87% wanted to know about any health risks they might have, and almost the same number wanted to find out more about their family background.
Interestingly, only about one in five people actually talked to a doctor about their test results. Most folks felt they could understand the results on their own. And, this wasn't just due to luck; people who worked in health or biological sciences felt even more confident. After getting their results, many people had mixed feelings. Most were glad, but a small group felt worried, especially about their health. This led a lot of people to make some changes in their lives. Over 38% changed their diet, while around 24% started going for regular check-ups. Almost 17% also increased their physical activity. In total, more than 64% of people made some changes based on what they found out. This shows that genetic testing can have a real impact on people's lives, both in terms of their health and how they feel about it. But, it's important to remember that while most people felt good, some also had worries.
