Georgia is in the midst of Winter Storm Fern, bringing snow and ice to some areas while others remain unaffected. The National Weather Service and The Weather Channel have issued warnings and advisories, urging residents to stay alert.
Athens is under an ice storm warning until 10 a. m. Monday. Expect significant icing, power outages, and travel disruptions. A cold weather advisory is also in effect from 4-10 a. m. Monday, with wind chills dropping to 15 degrees. Freezing rain is expected throughout the day, transitioning to rain showers by 7 p. m. Ice accumulations of 0. 1 to 0. 3 inches are possible. Winds will be strong, with gusts reaching 20-25 mph today and up to 30 mph tomorrow. Temperatures will hover around 30 degrees, rising slightly to 36 degrees by evening.
Atlanta faces similar conditions, with an ice storm warning and cold weather advisory. Freezing rain is expected, with ice accumulations of less than 0. 1 inches. Winds will be strong, with gusts up to 25-30 mph today and slightly stronger tomorrow. Temperatures will rise to the 40's by afternoon but drop back into the 30's by tonight and into the 20's by early tomorrow morning.
Augusta is also under an ice storm warning until 10 a. m. tomorrow. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will become hazardous. Light snow was reported early this morning, with rain expected to turn into freezing rain by 3 p. m. and potentially a thunderstorm around 5-6 p. m. Ice accumulations of less than 0. 1 inches are possible. Winds will be strong, with gusts up to 25-30 mph today and slightly stronger tomorrow. Temperatures will rise to the 40's by afternoon and stay above 40 degrees until 7 a. m. tomorrow.
Savannah is largely avoiding the ice storm. However, showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected from 8 p. m. tonight through 4 a. m. tomorrow morning. Temperatures will stay in the 60's, so there's no risk of ice.
Snow is unlikely for most of Georgia, with only a 30% chance in Gainesville and Jasper and a 10% chance in surrounding areas like Athens. If it does snow, it will be light and not accumulate much.
