Georgia Sets New Early Voting Record amid Controversies and Recovery

Georgia saw a record-breaking turnout for early voting on Tuesday, with over 300,000 ballots cast. This is double the previous record from 2020, which stood at 136,000. The state, a crucial battleground, is still feeling the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and controversial changes to election rules that have led to numerous legal battles. Despite these challenges, voters in Atlanta reported smoother experiences this time around. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger stated that around 5-6% of voters are expected to vote by mail.New laws have made mail-in voting less convenient, with fewer drop boxes available and limited hours. However, more early voting days have been added to the calendar. Raffensperger also assured that safeguards are in place for a safe election, including audits of every race and random audits of voting equipment. Legal fights continue over new rules passed by the Republican-majority State Election Board, which Democrats fear could create post-election chaos.
