Getting Ready for Arizona’s Wet Season

Arizona, USAWed Jun 10 2026
Arizona’s monsoon kicks off June 15 and runs through September, bringing much-needed rain but also serious risks. Experts say this year’s monsoon could be wetter than usual, with a 30-50% chance of above-normal rainfall. That’s good news for the state’s water supply, but it also means preparing for flash floods, strong winds, and dust storms. The ground is extra dry after a light snowy winter, so water might not soak in as easily. Plus, El Niño could push some tropical storms closer to the region, boosting moisture even more. Yet, bigger storms don’t always mean safety. Extreme heat is a major concern—especially when temps hit the sweet spot (100-108°F), which fuels storm formation. But too much heat can also block storm growth, leading to dry lightning and high wildfire risks. Staying indoors during peak heat (10 a. m. –6 p. m. ), drinking water, and avoiding cars left in the sun are must-dos. Overnight lows staying above 90°F mean no real relief, making heat-related illnesses a real threat.
The real danger? Flash floods and debris flows. Hardened, drought-stricken soil can’t absorb water fast, and slopes can send deadly mudslides crashing down long after a storm ends. Low-lying areas near washes should prepare to act fast. Dust storms, fueled by sudden wind shifts, can blind drivers in moments—pull over and stay put until visibility clears. Lightning is another silent threat. One strike can start a fire even without rain, and cloud-to-ground bolts make up just 10% of strikes. Motorists should know Arizona gets over 500, 000 strikes each season. As for downbursts—sudden gusts from storms—they can flatten trees and kick up dangerous dust walls that travel far. The National Weather Service’s Monsoon Awareness Week (June 7–13) is the time to plan. Check flood maps, learn storm cues, and know where cooling centers are. The goal isn’t just to wait out the season—it’s to handle whatever comes safely.
