Ghana just took a huge step to clean up its energy money mess. In 2025, the country paid off $1. 47 billion in old energy debts. This big payment fixed a big problem with the World Bank and also paid back money owed to power companies.
Ghana has been having a tough time with energy for a while. There have been lots of blackouts because of unpaid bills. Last year, the president promised to cut down on the $2. 5 billion owed to power and gas companies.
The finance ministry said this is the start of a new, more careful way of handling money in the energy sector. They also made sure there's enough money set aside for future bills.
One big part of the payment was $597 million to the World Bank. This fixed a special promise the bank made to help with gas supplies. The promise was almost empty, which made it hard for Ghana to work with other countries.
The government also paid back $393 million to private power companies. This includes money owed to companies from Turkey and other places. These companies said this payment is a big deal. It shows Ghana is serious about fixing its energy problems.
Ghana wants to use more of its own gas instead of expensive fuels. This could help make energy cheaper and more reliable.
