Giant Robot That Lets You Walk Inside It

Shanghai, ChinaTue May 19 2026
A new Chinese company has announced a huge robotic suit that can be piloted by a human. The machine is almost three metres tall and can move on two legs or switch to four legs for rough ground. The pilot sits in a cockpit inside the torso and controls it from there. The robot is called the GD01 and is marketed as the first production‑ready manned transformable mecha. Unitree Robotics, which began in 2016 with robot dogs, now dominates the global quadruped market. In 2025 it shipped more than five thousand humanoid robots, outpacing even Tesla.
Unitree shows the GD01 smashing through a wall of cinder blocks in its promotional video. The cost is about 3. 9 million yuan, close to €500 000. Details such as battery life, speed, load capacity and operating time are not yet public. The company says the robot is meant for civilian use, warning operators to keep it safe and friendly. Potential applications include rescue work in collapsed buildings or hazardous industrial sites. However, the design also raises military concerns, even though Unitree insists it is not a weapon. The rise of such large, human‑piloted robots highlights both the promise and the risk of advanced robotics. While they could help people in dangerous situations, they also spark debate about safety, regulation and the future of work.
