General Motors is making big changes to its electric vehicle (EV) plans. The company is cutting about 5, 500 jobs, with 1, 750 people being laid off indefinitely. This is part of a larger strategy to adjust to slower EV sales and new rules.
One of the main changes is at the Factory Zero plant in Detroit. The plant will now run with just one shift instead of two. This means that out of the 3, 400 workers who were furloughed over the summer, only 2, 200 will return. The rest, around 1, 200 people, will be on indefinite layoff. Those returning will start back on January 5, 2026.
GM is also shutting down two battery plants. One is in Warren, Ohio, and the other in Spring Hill, Tennessee. These plants will close between January 5 and mid-2026. About 700 workers in Spring Hill will be on temporary layoff. In Warren, 850 workers will be on temporary layoff, while 550 will be on indefinite layoff.
The company says it is making these changes because EV demand is not as high as expected. They are also adjusting to new regulations. GM is not giving up on EVs, but they are being more careful with their plans. They are also using this time to upgrade the battery plants to make them more flexible.
This is not the first time GM has had to adjust its EV strategy. Earlier this month, they reported a $1. 6 billion charge as they slow down their EV plans. It seems the road to electric vehicles is not as smooth as they thought.
