Google is introducing a new feature in its AI-generated search summaries: ads. If you’re hunting for solutions, like removing grass stains from your pants, the AI might suggest products that could help, listed under a “sponsored” label. This change is part of a broader rollout in the US on mobile devices, with Google aiming to connect users quickly with relevant businesses and services when needed.
This isn’t the first time we’re seeing ads in AI summaries. Microsoft, for instance, includes them in its Copilot chatbot. But Google is also tweaking how these AI Overviews look. After a test run, webpages cited in the summary will be more visible on the right side of the screen, helping to drive traffic to those sites.
Why is this happening? Simply put, it helps users get quick recommendations and takes them directly to places where they can purchase those items. The catch? Ads will only show up if your search has a clear commercial interest.
Some people might be excited about these new ads, but others could find them intrusive. It’s a trade-off between convenience and potential distraction. What do you think? Will this make your searches more helpful or just clutter your screen with more suggestions?
