Government's Bitcoin Gambit: A Risky Move?

Bitcoin was created in 2008 with a dream of challenging traditional currencies. Its creators wanted a digital currency that wasn't controlled by governments, but by a decentralized computer program. This program would limit the number of bitcoins to 21 million, making them scarce and valuable. Fast forward to today, and bitcoin is more popular than ever. But instead of replacing traditional money, it's mostly being hoarded. People are buying it hoping to make a quick profit, not to use it for everyday transactions. This shift has changed how some people view government involvement with bitcoin. Some politicians, seeing an opportunity, have started talking about creating government bitcoin reserves. Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. both proposed this idea during the last presidential election. Trump wanted to use bitcoins the government already had, while Kennedy wanted to buy up to 4 million bitcoins. Senator Cynthia Lummis even introduced a bill to finance a bitcoin stash using gold from Fort Knox.
Trump's plan became a reality when he issued an executive order in March. The "Strategic Bitcoin Reserve" was born. But why? The White House says it's about leadership in digital assets. Others say it's about paying down debt or strengthening the dollar. However, these reasons don't hold up under scrutiny. For instance, paying off debt with bitcoin would require its value to skyrocket. And even if it did, selling the bitcoin could cause a backlash from bitcoin holders. As for strengthening the dollar, gold hasn't been propping up the dollar since the 1970s. So, a bitcoin hoard wouldn't change much. Ironically, Trump's plan didn't even boost bitcoin's price. Instead, it disappointed bitcoin enthusiasts and opened the door to potential conflicts of interest. But the executive order leaves room for more government bitcoin purchases, which could mean more taxpayer money invested in cryptocurrency.
