Gray Whales in Trouble: A Climate Crisis Story

Their main diet, tiny shrimp-like creatures called amphipods, is disappearing due to changing ocean conditions. The decline in gray whale numbers is not just happening in the open ocean. In breeding grounds like San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja California, the number of adult whales has dropped significantly. Predators like orcas are taking advantage of the situation, attacking and eating the calves. This is a stark contrast to the past, when the lagoon was a safe haven for these whales.The loss of Arctic sea ice is a major factor in the decline of gray whale populations. The ice is crucial for the growth of algae, which in turn supports the amphipods that whales feed on. With less ice, there is less algae, and thus fewer amphipods. This chain reaction is leaving the whales with less food. The recent COP30 Climate Summit in Brazil did not meet previous commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This lack of action is bad news for gray whales and other marine life. It is a reminder that our actions have consequences, and the whales are paying the price for our inaction. Gray whales were once hunted for their oil, but now they are falling victim to the very thing that replaced whale oil: fossil fuels.
