Growing Minds, Growing Gardens: A Summer of Discovery for Boston and Cambridge Students

In a city filled with concrete and steel, a group of Boston and Cambridge students are learning to tend urban gardens and discover the joy of growing their own food. The CitySprouts Green Team Summer Program is a unique initiative that not only teaches students about science and the natural world but also fosters leadership skills, community engagement, and social-emotional education. But why is it so important to teach students about gardening in urban areas? Research shows that people living in cities without green spaces are at a higher risk of illness, anxiety, and depression. By giving students the opportunity to grow their own food, CitySprouts is not only teaching them about the importance of green spaces but also empowering them to make positive changes in their communities.As students work in the gardens, they learn about plant anatomy, native plants, and gardening techniques. They also get to take part in field trips, meet community leaders, and engage in hands-on activities that teach them about the science of plants. And, of course, they get to enjoy the fruits of their labor - literally! In the classroom, students learn to make pesto with their own basil, a fun and delicious way to connect with their newfound knowledge. But CitySprouts is more than just a summer program. During the academic year, they work with pre-K through fifth graders in 24 public schools, with half in Cambridge and half in Boston. This initiative not only provides students with a unique learning experience but also helps to bridge the gap in science education and access to nature in urban neighborhoods. So, what can we learn from the CitySprouts Green Team Summer Program? For starters, it shows that even in the most urban of settings, nature can thrive.
