When Darian Hall and Elisa Shankle started HealHaus in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood back in 2018, they wanted to bring wellness services to a community that often lacked them. Their studio offered yoga, acupuncture, and therapy to locals, becoming a vital part of the community. Even when the physical space closed last summer, their mission continued. Hall has since launched the HealHaus Foundation, a non-profit aiming to provide free therapy services, especially for Black women.
The foundation will select people for 12-week wellness scholarships, combining therapy and meditation sessions. Hall believes self-care and mental health are key to his own journey. He advises others to set boundaries and not overload themselves. There's also a plan to open more physical spaces in the future. Hall emphasizes that therapy should be accessible to everyone, not just when things go wrong. It helps us be better for our families and communities.
