Skin healing can be tricky, especially when wounds get wet or when materials used cause irritation. But what if there was a way to make the process smoother? Scientists created a special gel using tiny bits of bioactive glass, hyaluronic acid, and a compound called carbomer940. This gel, with an average particle size of about 13 micro-meters and 15. 8% bioactive glass, was tested on cells and in real-life wounds.
Initially, it helped cells grow and move faster, even triggering the release of important proteins like alpha-SMA and collagen I. Later, it guided fibroblast cells to differentiate properly, which is crucial for reducing scarring. When tested on actual wounds, this gel outperformed regular bioactive glass powder. Though it’s similar to a commercial product called Dermlin paste, it solved issues like local irritation due to high pH and poor adhesion. This study shows how bioactive glass gels can specifically control cell behavior, offering a promising step towards better wound treatments.
